There's the Minster which is amazing in itself but has Roman ruins in the crypts beneath it. There's the Jorvik viking centre, which is great, York Dungeon, which is a lot of fun in the spirit of HH, and one of the many many museums there has a preserved cell where Dick Turpin was held. That's really only scratching the surface, but I don't want to sound like the Tourist Board. I've had great holidays in York.
It's surrounded by lovely countryside and you could maybe get coach trips to other historical attractions throughout the north of England. National Express coaches that go from city to city are very cheap, especially compared to rail travel. There are lots of amazing things to see in the North of England and it's cheaper than down South.
