Also, medal wise he has both the Queen's South Africa Medal and the king's South Africa Medal, which means that he not only served in the Boer War during the King's reign, but also in Victoria's, as to have the King's South Africa medal (thanks Wikipedia!): "The medal was not issued alone but always with the Queen's South Africa Medal or QSA. The KSA was awarded only to those troops who fought in 1902, and who had served for 18 months. Service did not have to be continuous, but even with continuous service the recipient would have had to serve from December 1900 to have 18 months service before the war ended in May 1902 (and commencing before the death of Queen Victoria on 22 January 1901)."
So that's just completely destroyed all head-canon about those two.

(I am much more upset by this than I should be. And it's totally illogical, because I can cope with reading/writing fics where they die even though I'm convinced that they survive and grow old in a cottage together. But the idea that they aren't early twenty-somethings who were at boarding school together only a few years ago? COGNITIVE DISSONANCE, IT ACTUALLY HURTS.)

(And don't worry, I am too. I think it's just cos they're - well, they're them. They wouldn't be best friends if Blenkinsop was a Major and Maltravers wasn't unless there'd been an epic baptism of fire, and even then, the rank structure!!! They wouldn't be them!!!!!)

(Yes! They wouldn't be them! I could maybe, maybe have coped with Maltravers being one rank higher than Blenkinsop, because he's always cast as the protective one anyway, but... the other way around? Nope, can't deal with it. And they would still have had to be twenty-somethings. So, yes, interesting though a fic about the suddenly more realistic them would be? It's never going to replace my headcanon.

My headcanon will stay my headcanon! I think their public school together, joining up young and innocent then surviving and living happily in a cottage is a collective fandom headcanon...

(nope, I refuse to believe this. Especially as Maltravers is also the one who asks the pertinent questions in the sketch whereas Blenkinsop is ... well ... dim, NONE OF IT MAKES SENSEEEEEE *bursts into tears and hugs you for comfort*)
