A/N I just realized that this probably should have been part 16... sometimes... Sorry, sorry! D: I didn't write anything in the correct order and... ugh...

Chapter 17. Weddings and Old Mates

William looked great in his new suit. ”Wonderful.” Maltravers said and smiled. ”Smashing.”
”Dreadful.” the younger brother said and smiled over his thick book about... kidneys or something.
”Oh shut up! At least I have found a girl.”
”I am joking, Will. Calm down. You look great.”
”Thank you.” William said. ”I hope that she will say yes.”
”Of course she will, son!” George exclaimed. ”How could she not agree on marrying you?” He smiled to his son, his oldest son who had survived the second World War. And come out of it with a medal too.
”We'll, I guess I should be off then.” He said, and made his way out to the hallway where his father was. ”Wish me luck!”
”Never, boys like you don't need luck.” Maltravers said and patted the young mans back. ”Off you go and ask the woman to marry you, so that I don't need to bother about feeding you anymore.”
His son only laughed and disappeared out into the summernight.
When he came back he had a smile on his face, and Maltravers got to hear everything about the evening, well William didn't tell him that they might had did a little more than kissed in the bushes. (okay, he didn't tell him about the kissing bit either, that would just be odd because his father probably didn't understand kisses, and how it was to be young and not being able to show your love because it was wrong... before you got married.)
But he did tell his father, who had made him tea, that Ruth was wonderful and ate sandwiches with the most adorable face, and that her lemonade was lovely. And that the blanket had worked, and the sky had been cleared. And that he had seen John and Rose a bit further away.
”And?”
”What?”
”You have been talking and talking about what she liked to eat, the question part son, did she say yes?”
”Yes, yes, of course she did, dad!” he smiled. ”And she loved mothers ring.”
Maltravers nodded. ”Good, good, I hope you asked her like a gentleman.”
”Well... eh, I just sort of asked it when we where on our way home, because I forgot, and she screamed and said 'of course, I though you where never going to ask'.”
”Well, at least it is something you both will remember.”

”Bertie!” Helen called from the kitchen. ”We are invited to a wedding, you know the one you where in the army with, well his son is getting married... but in Newcastle”
Blenkinsop jumped up from his chair. ”No? We must go, Helen, I don't care that it's a long way!” he said and made his way out in the kitchen. ”This is lovely, let me see.” He said and read the invitation, it was strange to receive an invitation from someone you did not know.
A november wedding, how charming. Helen said that she would've waited until spring, but Blenkinsop knew that an army-man did not wait to marry if they where in love.
During the second war, Blenkinsop had served from home, making decisions. He had hated it at first, because he heard how bizarre some of the things he and the group of people said was ridiculous and would only create more work for the soldiers. But after a while he stopped caring. The war against Hitler was far to bizarre itself.
He had met his Maltravers at the end of the war, and a few times under it. The chaos was a really good cover to hide under, take the train to Newcastle and spend a night just talking to each other. At least 4 times during the seven year war that had happened. Blenkinsop had almost cried when the name ”William Maltravers” was on the list of survivors after the Battle of Somme. (if he was correct the boy went into the military after wards to)

”I will need a new dress.” she said.
”If we have enough rations.” he said and smiled to her. And she smiled, oh he should not have said that. She started talking about how she wanted it to look. Blenkinsop just nodded and agreed, but couldn't really understand how a dress could be so complicated, and how many colors and patterns could there really be?
”And Anne would love it, doesn't Maltravers have a younger son?” Helen said. ”Anne Maltravers, that sounds nice.” she said.
At first he thought it sounded wonderful, but after two seconds he realized how odd christmas and other family affairs would be. ”Oh let the girl find her own husband.”
”She is not getting younger.”
”She is only 19.” he said.
”But she is not getting any younger either way.”

Maltravers smiled when he saw Blenkinsop. He had been surprised when his son wanted to invite him, and the only reason he could think of was that his son wanted to advance in the military, and who was better to befriend than Blenkinsop.
It was all rather odd, really. Maltravers had been the one who wanted to be in the army, and Blenkinsop was the one who actually made it into a career after the Great War.
Maltravers had claimed that Blenkinsop would not be able to come, he lived in London for God's sake. But Blenkinsop came, probably to see Maltravers again. ”General!” Maltravers said at the dinner the day before the wedding.
”Old bean!” Blenkinsop said and shook his hand, even though he would like to hug him up against the wall. ”Nice to see you, you remember Helen, but I don't believe you have met Anne.” How sad wasn't that? Maltravers had never seen his daughter, his pride, even though she wasn't exactly his. They said hello, and then Charles presented himself, shyly and mumbling, and Helen tried to pair him and Anne together, but Charles just nodded and was saved by the bride and groom themselves.

The wedding had been wonderful. Maltravers had not been able to keep his eyes dry, Charles thought that he was silly but probably struggled to keep them in to. The bride, Ruth, was the prettiest girl in the room, and her dress was wonderful.
after wards they ate lunch and danced, and danced and danced. ”Beautiful.” Blenkinsop said and smiled. ”Touching.”
”Weddings are still romantic.”
”I would still like to marry you.” Blenkinsop whispered, and put his arm around Maltravers chair.
”Sush.” Maltravers said and turned away from the beautiful scene.
”Helen wants Anne to marry your youngest.” Blenkinsop grinned. ”We would get to be together all the time.”
”That would be odd.” he said. ”If I didn't miss you, would my heart not skip a beat every time I saw you?”
”Probably not.”
”Boring.” Maltravers said. ”I am going to the bathroom.” he said. ”See you in five?” Blenkinsop nodded. Maltravers got up, when to the bathroom and waited, patiently at Blenkinsop who came just five minutes after wards. He locked the door and the kissed, and kissed. ”I could do you right here you know.”
”You are a pervert.” Blenkinsop said, and smiled. ”We are to old.” Maltravers just smiled and kissed him, held him tight. Then they combed their hair before Maltravers left, five minutes before Blenkinsop.
He was just in time for the last dance, that he shared with Helen. (and to Helen's delight, Anne shared it with a boy her age)

It was a class reunion. Or Charles Stuart had decided to organize it, it was more, ”let's look at our old school and dorms, then get pissed at the local pub like when they where 18”.
Maltravers and Blenkinsop met up at the train station in the little village. ”It's like we are comming back from a holiday.” Maltravers said.
”A really long one.” Blenkinsop replied. They had not visited the school since they had left it.
It was rather depressing, the school was even moore gloomy, the cricketfield was long gone. And the teachers retired, or dead. And it turned out that Richard Neville had died to, in the second war. But maybe that had been just as well, since he and his cousin had been arguing over who should get their fathers company. But still. They had never been able to say good bye.
The new students looked even more odd and disturbed than they had been, and the dorms had not changed a bit. (Maltravers argued that it added nostalgic value, Blenkinsop felt sorry for the poor boys who had to sleep on the cold, hard beds that had been around to see the reign of four monarchs.)
”So...” Maltravers began, but was interrupter by the door that flung open. In came Charles Stuart, Sotherby right behind him like always. He was dressed in a perfectly cut suit, in colours that suited him. He still had black hair, and he looked smashing.
”Oh dear!” he said, his face still smiling, they had not met since the day that they left the school back in 1911. ”Isn't GeorgeandAlbert!” he cried and shook their hands, Sotherby joined in, did the same thing. ”You two, what do you do now a days?”
”I am in the military.” Blenkinsop said. ”Have been since the first war. Or before that.”
Charles nodded. ”Ah, yes the First War, I was in that one too, horrible, horrible. But it learned me how to appreciate the good things in life. Spent the day in a tree and ran around across Europe.” he smiled. Blenkinsop smiled back. ”And you, George? What do you do do?”
”I am a librarian.” Maltravers said. ”Got injured in the war so I couldn't continue...” They silenced again.
”Well I took over my fathers 'empire'.” Charles said, laughing, his father had owned the company that made lots of famous candy, and the factories too, but he had died when Charles was only 19. ”And Sotherby is my assistant, though he does all of my work to! So, who is happily married? Oh, sorry you doesn't need to answer that...”
”I am married.” Blenkinsop said. ”And I have a daughter.”
”I am a widower...” Maltravers said. ”Two boys.”
”I am so sorry.” Charles said and looked back at Sotherby who nodded, both of them had been convinced that 'GeorgeandAlbert' had moved into a house together and continued to do silly stuff and sing songs all day long, baking cakes and cuddle with kittens and such. Not to... be married and have kids, and stand so far away from each other. It had been pretty obvious that they where meant to be together forever. Sotherby had told Charles that men to could love each other. (Charles was so happy that he didn't, he had tried with some young boy but no, it hadn't been his thing.)
”Well, I am married, with Catherine, she is lovely... I don't have any children... with her, but you know how I am.” He laughed again.
They where quiet for a while.
”So... have you heard anything from Mad-George?” Blenkinsop said, to ease the tension.
”Not since christmas, but I send him candy every month. He likes the strawberry-flavor fudge.” Charles smiled.
Sotherby shook his head. ”No, it's the banana-flavored fudge he likes.”
”Oh, well, he seems to be doing fine, he will probably outlive us all!”
Maltravers smiled. ”That would not surprise me at all.”
”Oh come one, let's go and get drunk!” Charles said, he did not like the old dorm. It reminded him of his fathers imprisonment and later death. He just smiled and decided that he would get George and Albert to spend a night together (because they looked like they needed it), but that plan went out the window after a few pints and a young pretty lady that was called ”Roooose”.
But the rest of the group entertained themselves, and Albert fell asleep on top of George in their room that night.

So Charles can see that they need each other.

Great add yet again.

I would say that Charles is an adorably ignorant, and Sothers probably told him.

Thank you dear!! Your comments make me so happy! :)
