Round 3 - Return of the Meme

General Rules
  • Personal attacks and any kind of abusive trolling, hate speech, or bullying are obviously forbidden. Anon comments violating this rule will be deleted, signed in members will be banned.
  • If your comment is deleted/screened/frozen and you don't know why, please email the mod at  hhanonmeme@gmail.com. (If you notice it happening to your comments and you know they're safe, a quick email for the mod to come and unscreen them would be helpful also).
  • Prompt posts will close to new prompts at 3,000 comments.
Prompting Rules
  • One prompt per comment.
  • Please follow the correct format (see below).
  • Include trigger warnings in the subject line. Use your discretion and please be considerate.
  • If your prompt is missing something, such as a subject or a warning, repost it in it’s entirety. It is not enough to reply to your own comment with the missing information. The mod will delete the previous duplicate comment.
  • Multiple fills of the same prompt by different author!anons are allowed.
  • If for any reason you start a fill but feel you can't finish the WIP you've created, and if you're happy to let someone finish it for you, put it up for HH Meme Fostering and Adoption.
  • Prompts for projects other than Horrible Histories (ie. Spy, Gavin and Stacy, Rev, St. Trinian's, the O2 adverts etc., and RPF involving actors from those projects should be posted at the What? They've acted in other things?! post.
Format of Prompts
  • Put [RPF] before RPF prompts.
  • For crossover prompts: "[Crossover], HH Character(s)/Other Character(s), [Fandom]"
  • Anyone, everyone, no one? Use "Other."
  • Put [GEN] before GEN prompts, just so you don't get unwanted shipping.
  • Use appropriate warnings. I'm trusting you all to know what that means.
  • Don't embed any photos, videos or other media.
  • Copy and paste links in full; anon comments with active coded links are marked as spam  and the mod doesn't switch accounts often enough - it may be a few days before those  screened comments are de-screened (see: emailing the mod a heads up if it happens).
Archiving Prompts and Fills
That's nearly the end of the storia, for onto the scene comes our much loved meme: HAIL TO THE QUEEN OF PROMPTIA.

Hardy/Beatty/Nelson

They were threesoming, how Beatty and Hardy cope after Nelson dies?

FILL: "Adjustment", Hardy/Beatty, Angst, PG-13 (Warning, previous death) 1/4

The bed's too big.

It's always been big - it had to be, when he tended to hog all the covers, and Hardy snored and kicked in his sleep, and - and -

But it's never been this big.

The wind grows louder, the covers shifting on the bed with the movement of the ship – still rumpled from this morning.

He curls up in Hardy's chair, uncaring of the look he'll probably give when he leaves the Captain's meeting, and looks at the bed, trying to work out when it got so huge.

The door opens and Hardy enters, raising an eyebrow at Beatty.

Beatty raises his in reply, falls into the comfortable back-and-forth he and Hardy has, all thre - all -

He shakes himself, a crack appearing in his heart, and looks up at Hardy.

"Any news on the storm?"

Hardy sighs as he removes his jacket, sitting heavily in Beatty's chair.

"It'll be here soon, but there's nothing more we can do apart from sit tight and wait it out. How are the men?"

"Same - nothing more I can do I'm afraid, we've just got to wait till morning."

They sit in silence.

The wind howls louder.

Beatty's sure that the bed must have been changed at some point. There's no way it was that big before.

"I'm sorry about Andrew," Hardy says, and Beatty snorts, hugging his knees.

"He was defiant to the last," he replies with a smile (another crack appearing as he remembers) and Hardy smiles at that - thin, but a smile nonetheless.

"Sounds like -" his breath catches and for a moment Beatty doesn't want him to finish that sentence, "like everyone on board," he says, and Beatty wants to sob in relief.

"True."

"Except for the loblolly boy," he adds, and they both laugh at that, the cabin ringing with the noise.

"... Where are you sleeping tonight?" Hardy asks.

There’s a spattering of rain on the window.

Beatty stops laughing.

There's a lump in his throat, and he looks at the bed.

It seems to have grown bigger.

"Well, I don't think I've slept in my own bed for months," he says lightly, and Hardy doesn't reply.

He - he doesn't reply, he just stares at the bed, and Beatty can't curl up any smaller on the chair.

"What about you?"

Hardy blinks, looks at him, and Beatty can't - he can't -

"What about you? Where are you sleeping?" he asks, trying to be as uncaring as he can.

He knew that he came along later, always knew that and always will, but as Hardy just turns his head and stares at the bed again, the cracks in his heart grow wider.

"Right. Well - I'd better - Lots of things to do -" he babbles, unfolding himself and grabbing his jacket.

Hardy looks up at that, and Beatty looks away. He can’t – he can’t look.

"Beatty -"

"No, it’s fine, I understand, I'll just -"

"William."

He pauses, his hand on the door handle, rests his head on the door.

"Thomas, don't. Please.”

He feels Hardy's hand on his shoulder - as hesitant as the first time he touched him and asked if he wanted - he turns, hand still on the handle.

Hardy's biting his lip.

"I wasn't asking you to leave," he says quietly, and Beatty swallows, the lump still in his throat, the cracks in his heart growing ever deeper.

"I don't know if I can do this, not - not without -"

Hardy moves his hand to Beatty's, covering the handle completely, and when he speaks it's as choked as Beatty.

"Please."

And at that, the fractures in Beatty’s heart grow as wide as the sea.

The bed's too big, and the sheets still smell of this morning.

The bed’s too big, and there isn't the comforting weight of - of - of Nelson at his back, or an elbow in his ribs as Hardy misjudges the distance between Beatty and Nelson and smacks his arm on Beatty instead.

The bed’s too big, and there isn’t helpless laughter as they try to remove clothing and end up having three people trying to remove a jacket at the same time.

The bed’s too big, and there isn’t the feeling of home as Hardy snores into his shoulder and Nelson grips tight enough to bruise.

As the storm breaks overhead, and the windows are plastered with water, Hardy and Beatty tumble onto the bed, and it’s too big, and there are not enough hands and feet and gasps and sighs.

There’s not enough.

It’s not enough.

And as the storm rages, and as Hardy shudders above him, and there’s no one shuddering beneath him, Beatty’s heart finally breaks.

So sad, their hearts breaking is so real.

Great writing.

...I've been trying to find words about this for hours now and in the end all I can come up with is ;;

Seriously, though, this was fantastic - heartbreaking and beautiful and showing so many glimpses of their relationship and... It just made me cry, actual tears because of how broken they both are and how they've both clearly lost something and the gaps and the bed being too big and. ;;

This is just really, really fantastic. And I absolutely adored it. <333

(Favourite line: "He knew that he came along later, always knew that and always will, but as Hardy just turns his head and stares at the bed again, the cracks in his heart grow wider.")

The sense of shared history here is amazing and devastating. This was utterly heartbreaking.
