A Wild Discussion Post Appears!

Because I suppose we all need somewhere to squee.

Venting frustrations is what anon memes are made for, but keep it respectful.

You are allowed to talk about the show, the actors, their other projects, the twitter RP, the forum, and what you had for breakfast.

Semi-Final show for SCD does HH... erm... HH does SCD even. SO hyper.

Did anyone else notice

[identity profile] twizzle-eeyore.livejournal.com 2011-09-21 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
in s2e8 the bust of 'Julius Caesar' they have for Crimewatch BC is actually a bust of Augustus? Or am I just being a classics geek? (Augustus is one of my favourite emperors after all, and his face is SO recognisable as his...and that's not even counting his hair! His hair is how it is always portrayed on Augustus and completely not JC...)

.... I'm reading too much into a 'kids' TV show, aren't I?

...I now want to rewatch that sketch. This is not a bad thing. :D

(And I'm very pleased by how many Classics geeks are on here! :DD I love Augustus too, Augustus is the best and I will fangirl over him to anybody who will listen. Do you have any other favourites?)

Re: Did anyone else notice

[identity profile] twizzle-eeyore.livejournal.com 2011-09-21 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! Especially as most of the classicists I know aren't into the same things as me, then ta daa! Millions of them all in one place with the same interests! (exaggeration, but meh *shrugs*)

I went to the Ashmolean for the first time this summer and had a bit of a squee at the Prima Porta Augustus in the cast gallery and kinda freaked out my grandad by asking him to take a photo of me with it...

Nero's my absolute favourite because he's just amazing, but I love Caligula too (if I ever have a son I'm determined to call him Gaius after him). I also have a soft spot for Hadrian because of his relationship with Antinous <3 How about you?

I specialised in the Julio-Claudians, so naturally like them best. I haven't focussed much on the ones that came after the Flavians so don't know the later ones that well

OMG LOL

Just went on wikipedia to look up Hephaestion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hephaestion) and found this written there:

Hephaestion (OR HEPH FOR SHORT..WELL THAT'S WHAT ALEX CALL'S ME AT ANY RATE) (Greek: Ἡφαιστίων, alternative spelling: "Hephaistion"; c. 356 BC – 324 BC), son of Amyntor, was a Macedonian nobleman and a general in the army of Alexander the Great. HE WAS A SKINNY MAN AND HAD AMAZING HAIR...HE OFTEN WENT BY THE NAME MATHEW BAYNTON JUST TO CONFUSE ALEX (WHICH WAS ENORMOUS FUN I MAY ADD) He was "... by far the dearest of all the king's friends; he had been brought up with Alexander and shared all his secrets."[1] This friendship lasted their whole lives, and was compared, by others as well as themselves, to that of Achilles and Patroclus.

HE IS MARRIED TO ZOE HUDSON, A CHRMING AND INCREDIBLY NICE YOUNG LADY FROM MELBOURNE. (SHE ALSO HAS FABULOUS HAIR.) THEY BOTH CURRENTLY RESIDE IN SKINNYMANDRIA WHERE IT IS NEVER COLD (BECAUSE ZOE DOESN'T LIKE COLD THAT MUCH) AND THEIR LIVES ARE GENEERALLY SPENT WATCHING HORRIBLE HISTORIES OR MUCKING AROUND ON TUMBLR...BOTH IMPORTANT CUSTOMS IN SKINNYMANDRIA.

I screencapped it incase it changes before people can see this...omg it made me lol so hard. HH has taken over wikipedia!

... What?

Re: Did anyone else notice

(Anonymous) 2011-09-22 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! So many people with a interest in the early Roman empire, it's actually brilliant. :DD

I can relate. When my Classics class got to take a trip to Greece I was basically hovering around all week on a Classics high and freaking out my friends... Not that I really cared. I got to go to the Parthenon! And walk around the ruins of Olympia! And go over what was (technically) the Isthmus! Reason for any sane person to hover. ^^

I identify with Claudius to a slightly odd amount, since he was bullied by so many people and never really expected to become emperor, but Hadrian is also one of my favourites (I want a Horrible Histories sketch about him because that'd be AMAZING... Or even just his wife, having it off with his historian while he was away. <<) And a fair few others, including Nero and Caligula and Commodus and Domitian and Elagabalus, who I don't like as such but am absolutely fascinated by. They all led such interesting lives that you can't really help but be in awe of them! (Even if they did horrible, horrible things.)

I'm also really, really fond of the imperial women - the empresses and daughters and even the cousins. I may fangirl Livia a little too much, though she was badass, and Agrippina the Younger killed my favourite emperor but still fascinates me (and maybe makes me admire her a bit too, yes) because she was so cunning and so intelligent and actually incredibly brave in her death.

Oh, same! My course, at least for the past year or so, focused mainly on the Julio-Claudians and so I know a lot more about them than the ones that came afterwards. (I'm fully determined to read up, though, because for every slightly dull one there seem to be five ones who led absolutely brilliant lives.)

oh, just realised my comment before that is screened :/ (possibly because I put a link in it? idk)
Anyway, someone changed the wikipedia page for Hephaestion so it talked about skinnymandria etc - I found it funny, capped and copied it before it was changed, and posted it here...
