A Wild Discussion Post Appears!

Because I suppose we all need somewhere to squee.

Venting frustrations is what anon memes are made for, but keep it respectful.

You are allowed to talk about the show, the actors, their other projects, the twitter RP, the forum, and what you had for breakfast.

It really is!! :D

om you're so lucky! I went to Rhodes when I was 7 but that's the only time I've been to Greece. I'd love to go and travel through Greece and see the sites. I've been to Rome twice (once with college, once with uni) and got teased as I took notes all the time - but I wanted to know and remember as much as I could! Everyone was desperate for my notes once we'd got home, haha.

Oh, Claudius is amazing. He ended up as such an awesome emperor despite everything everyone held against him. And totally agree, a HH sketch about Hadrian would be awesome! I'm fascinated with Elagabalus too, especially since I know a couple of people who are trans and are genderqueer as it brings him into a whole new level of understanding in my mind.

Nero's horrible things he did are part of the reason I adore him...I wouldn't change him for the world. He's a dispicable character but so amazing at the same time.

Livia is amazing, as is Agrippina the younger! I've always adored them in an awestruck kind of way combined with a 'nooo!' kind of way... you know what I mean, obviously!

I did 2 years of Roman History at AS and A Level, the first year being Roman Britain and the second the Julio Claudian Emperors - I was so much better at the emperors than Roman Britain. Then when I went to uni I did Ancient History and Archaeology and basically specialised down into the early Roman Empire and late Iron Age Britain/Europe (there weren't enough modules offered for me to solely concentrate on the Romans, boo). I adore them so much, and I'm one of the only people I know who has read Suetonius and Tacitus for fun...but Suetonius especially is so entertaining!

oh, and regarding Hadrian, if you're in the UK did you go see the Hadrian exhibit at the British Museum about 4 years ago? It was amazing! I went on my own and had such a fantastic time looking at everything, and it's made me desperate to go to the Louvre to see the massive bust of Antinous again.

do you ever reference something, or say something, related to HH when with people who don't watch it, then get really confused when no-one gets what you're talking about before you realise what you've done?

I was in a shop with my sister earlier and we walked past one of those TV advert podium things and I giggled, spun round to her and went "HI, I'M A SHOUTY MAN!" and she just looked at me really weirdly and told me to stop being a prat. I tried to show her HH once but she got bored (wtf idek).

Not quite as in context, when I was drunk a couple of weeks ago I started saying "vulture foot basket!" and "Hand eye-thingy owl!" randomly to my friends. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but no-one had a clue what I was on about. When I tried to explain they were hieroglyphics I just managed to confuse them more. "Vulture foot basket" has now kinda become an in-joke and I get it repeated back to me every so often now, which is quite fun... except none of them know where it's from as I couldn't convince them to watch HH.

LOL oh bless you. I had that earlier... Cactus gum related fail for me.

Bit of a random question here, but...

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
What historical period would you explode with glee if they covered?

I mean, from what I've read here and around the fandom the vast majority of people are History/Classics lovers (if not students/ex students/currently pursuing a career in those areas) so it'd make sense if there were certain historical events or people that'd cause gleesplosions if sketches appeared.

For me I'd pretty much explode if they did anything on Livia, or Matilda and Stephen and the train of bad ideas, or Eleanor of Aquitaine and her ability to kick ass everywhere she went, or Piers Gaveston and his absurdly annoying existance (...I like many people, yes.)

So, who is it for you?

(And feel free to flail over who you'd like to play them too. Fantasy is fun, after all! :DD)

[identity profile] amine-eyes.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh Matilda and Stephen would be AWESOME :DDD

Personally, I think I would actually explode with joy if they covered the birth of flight in Britain (The guy went up with a pig called Icarus II because people told him he wouold only fly when pigs did! The pig later got turned into sausages! HOW CAN THEY NOT HAVE THOUGHT OF THIS YET xD), or the Battle of Britain - but if they covered that bit, I would be torn between glee and :O because I am ever so slightly obsessed with that period and have thus read pretty much everything I can get my hands on with that it :D

I really really want them to do the birth of flight in Britain now - would be AMAZING :D

I've been reading a book on them and there's SO MUCH MATERIAL there. :DD The endless bad decisions, Matilda getting steadily more annoyed, the snowy march across the fields, Stephen apparently being the NICEST GUY EVER even when chained up and facing almost certain death...

...I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THAT BUT IT IS REALLY, REALLY AWESOME AND HILARIOUS AND XDDDDD. I kinda (most definitely) want to read more on that now! XDDD (a pig, a pig.)

Re: Bit of a random question here, but...

[identity profile] amine-eyes.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It would certainly be amazing :DDD

AND IT'S TRUE!

Basically, Lord Brabazon learnt to fly in France in 1908, was the first person to fly a British plane in Britain in May 1909, in October 1909 flew a mile over British soil and got the daily Mail prize of £1,000, and then in November, to prove that pigs could fly, probably made the first flight with live cargo (the pig), and basically was an all round awesome guy :DDD

If only they have a section in this series called "Insane Inventions" or something, then they could show it! Or Excruciating Edwardians :DDD

I HAVE THIS PROMBLEM!

My friend is 1/2 Scottish, and she had her phone out when we're not supposed to have them so I go
"Ohh, William wallace, Scottish rebel!" and she's all 'WTF you talking about?'. very sad XD

But if you say 'rebel' around my sister, no matter what, she'll shout "WILLIAM WALLACE, SCOTTSIH REBEL!" reeeally loudly. And finish the Boast Battle.

She pretend like she doesn't know what you're talking about. But she loves it really.

I would love to see some Australian history, which is almost certainly never going to happen. Seriously, a sketch about Captain Starlight would be amazing. His cattle stealing skills were so impressive the jury acquitted him and the government shut down Roma District Court for eight months. Or the Hume and Hovell expedition, where the English born Hovell and Australian born Hume ending up despising each other and racing back to Sydney to claim credit. Or the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge when a New Guard fascist swept in on horseback and cut the ribbon with a sword before Jack Lang got a chance because he thought a royal should open it. They also had a genuinely stupid plan to kidnap Lang because we had fascists that hated him more than they hated communists. Oh God, Lang could almost be a recurring character. He is the only state premier to have been dismissed by the governor because he disagreed with the federal approach to the Great Depression, so he withdrew all of NSW's money from its accounts and kept the cash in Trades Hall so the Federal Government couldn't get to it. When he heard he might be dismissed, he started plotting to have the governor arrested.

TL:DR, I love Australian history >.>

I'd love to see the Measly Middle Ages section covering the Wars of the Roses a bit more. There's so much that happened in such a short period of time and plenty of suitably horrible events/people to choose from. George, Duke of Clarence could go on Stupid Deaths if the story about his execution is true (drowned in wine lololol).

The thing I want most, though, is more on the Stuarts. Everyone knows about the Tudors but the Stuarts would give them a run for their money when it comes to religious conflict and wearing the most ridiculous sparkly shit ever. We get a decent amount of Civil War and Charles II, but it would be great to see the rest. Mat can keep playing them. All of them. Even Mary and Anne.

...apparently I am just interested in watching the cast kick the shit out of each other and seeing Mat in a dress (again).

Archiving

[identity profile] verecunda.livejournal.com 2011-09-28 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thought I should mention, just for anyone who's been watching the Delicious archive, you've probably noticed that archiving has sort of ground to a halt the last couple of days. That's because the system has been revamped since its move, and [livejournal.com profile] amine_eyes and myself are... not fans of the new site. We're hoping that Delicious can get its act together soon, but in case that doesn't happen, we're also trying out a possible alternative. Either way, hopefully we can get back up to speed over the next few days. Thought it was worth mentioning. Really sorry if it's been putting anyone out!

I'm completely mystified by what's happened to delicious (is it even possible to see all the tags any more?! I CAN'T FIND ANYTHING D:) so no worries, I hope you find a good alternative! and thank you so much for all the work you've done so far, the archive was absolutely brilliant until delicious made it impossible to use ♥♥

Re: Bit of a random question here, but...

... dude, I had no idea of any of these ... brb going to raid the uni library!

"not fans of the site" - you're so much politer than I am ;D

And thanks for putting the notice up - completely forgot to do it as I am such a flake at the moment :D

*squishes* we shall do it!

I can't even find a way to see all the tags when I'm logged in, and I don't think [livejournal.com profile] amine_eyes can, either. So, yeah... not helpful. x_x But we may have found a good alternative! It seems pretty decent so far, we're just fiddling about with it at the moment.

Re: Archiving

[identity profile] verecunda.livejournal.com 2011-09-28 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! There aren't enough obscenities in the English language to express my feelings re:Delicious right now, so politeness seemed the better option. XD

*squishes* We shall! Because we're just cool like that! Cool like fezzes! :D

Delicious fails... and for now we have the fills post right?

Re: Archiving

We do indeed have the fills post where you can find all the fills etc :)

It's just that the main archive with prompts and fills etc is down at the moment due to this issue.

Personally, I'd love to see something from Prohibition. All the glamorous 1920's outfits, the dodgy accents and maybe a Bugsy Malone style song. ♥
