yes he needed someone and I'd written myself into a corner by killing of his grandmother early on. Ben's mother being Russian would of course have mysterious slavic expereinces to fall back on (also explains why Ben did Russian at Oxford, well in my mind anyway given this is all 100% inaccurat)
