Re: Charles II/Sotherby, True love's first kiss [2a/2]

Turning back into the castle, Sothers makes his way for Catherine's room. He explains to her the state her husband is in, and recommends a visit.
"Certainly Sothers, thank you for coming for me," she says quietly, eyes watering. Together they make their way back to Charles and he allows her private time with the king. Meanwhile, he searches the place for the kings other family, his children. Some of them cry, some stay straight faced and some bring things. By the time everyone's been to see him it's almost morning again. Sothers hasn't had any sleep, and Charles doesn't look like he has either. His breathing is shallow, his face drawn and sickly pale, cold hands shaking on the bed covers. Sothers knows he's been sleeping most of the day, so this can't be right. He sits by his king; his Charles. Charles smiles up at him.

"Sothers... You look awful... Haven't you slept?" he asks, taking frighteningly long pauses between words. Yet he still cracks a smile at his loyal young advisor. The smile is catching, and Sothers finds himself smiling back. He opens his mouth to reply with a sarcastic comment, like he normally would. Instead, it starts a flood of tears. Charles looks a little shocked and takes his hand and pats it. His voice takes on a quieter tone.
"Sothers, I know I don't have that long... Please don't cry. I want to remember you happy."
Sothers looks up through teary eyes and wipes furiously at them with his sleeve.
"S-sorry Sire... I just..."
"You've had a hard night Sothers. I appreciate... what you've done... you didn't have to do anything... And you... You handled... It all so well," he says, his voice almost a whisper now. There's a soft knock at the door. Charles nods to Sothers.
"Could you get that please?"
Wiping again at his face, Sothers pushes through the heavy door. One of the servants stands in the doorway, wringing his hands together. Sothers recognises him.
"Williams?" the young man bows his head.
"Yes, sir! I, well we in kitchen, thought that... We wanted to give you, and his Majesty, this," and he holds out an old looking bottle of champagne. Sothers chuckles slightly, making Williams smile.
"It's the Kings favourite," Sothers notes, taking from him.
"We know he's... Unwell. We thought we'd... Yeah. Tell him that all of us are thinking of him," the man bows his head again and spins on his heels before Sothers can refuse. Sothers makes his way back into the room.
