Having acknowledged Richard, he enquired of him if he needed to use the garderobe, knowing deep down that the man would probably refuse any help from him. But he was greatly surprised when Richard nodded his head, shifting awkwardly to the edge of the bed and carefully easing himself down onto his feet, staggering as he tried to stand. Moving forward, Henry caught hold of him, slipped an arm around his body and helped him across the room, depositing him on the wooden seat before leaving him to his own devices. He guessed that Richard would call out for help once he had finished.
Knowing that he had many things to sort out before they started out on the journey to London, Henry called for his servants and advisors, demanding hot water and cloths, so he could wash and food enough for him, his advisors and Richard to break their fast. He wanted to get to London as fast as possible; he needed to be in the place from which the country was run. But now he did have a problem that he didn’t have the day before. He knew that for his own safety it would be best if he took Richard with him, but would he be up to the long ride after the treatment he suffered at Lord Stanley’s hands. They could use a litter for him to travel in but if he had even one iota of the pride Henry guessed he did, Richard would crawl rather than be transported in a manner used only by women. There would only be one thing for it, whether he liked it or not Richard would have to ride side saddle behind one of Henry’s most trustworthy men. Or maybe even behind him. That way they could talk and maybe reach an agreement on matters pertaining to both of their futures.
