The real Dick Turpin had smallpox scars according to Wikipedia. I agree that the song supposed to be kinda ironic - they wanted to please a portion of the fanbase by making him look sexy and swoonsome - and eminently succeeded :-) - but they couldn't have got away with it if the lyrics implied that he was glamorous as well.
